Derry dog owners are being encouraged to avail of free neutering and microchip services being provided in the Ballymagroarty and Hazelbank areas over the next two weeks.
Sinn Fein Cllr. McGinley said said they had been longstanding problems across the city from unwanted litters and stray dogs which could not be identified and the Dogs Trust initiative had proven in the past to be an “effective way” to address such difficulties.
He added: “Neutering will prevent unwanted litters whilst micro-chipping allows stray dogs to be quickly identified and returned to owners.
“It is important to note also that micro-chipping is a requirement for possession of a dog licence.
Stressing the service was free, Cllr McGinley encouraged dog owners to take the opportunity and bring their dogs along to any of the following locations between 11.00aam and 12.30pm.:
Monday, 29 September: Layby at St. Eithne’s Primary School
Thursday, 2 October: Holy Family car park.
