The provision of a temporary footpath running alongside the perimeter of Melvin, from the bottom of the Ballycolman to the water wall, will hopefully facilitate most people who use the Strabane pedestrian thoroughfare, local Sinn Fein Cllr Brian Mc Mahon has said.
Cllr McMahon said the “temporary” stoned path would “hopefully” accommodate most people who used the walkway during the construction of the town’s footbridge.
The contractor has said the path will remain in place until about next March when it may have to be closed off because of the nature of the machinery that is scheduled to brought in to undertake the bridge works around that time.
As a result, Cllr McMahon said “other arrangements” would then have to be looked at and opening up a pedestrian route through Melvin during opening hours would appear to be the most obvious option available.
Cllr McMahon added: ” I will continue to liaise with the contractor and DCAL in Council to ensure pedestrian access is facilitated at all times during the bridge works.”
He concluded: “The contractor has also committed to keep local residents and the wider public informed if there are going to be any changes to the pedestrian arrangements.”
