An increase in thefts of car registration plates has prompted the PSNI in Strabane to issue a warning to motorists.
In one recent weekend, police received 10 reports of thefts.
A police spokesperson said tolen plates were being used in crime, in particular, they erre being put on cars that were then used in “drive-offs” from filling stations.
The spokesperson added: “The aim, of course, is to make it harder for the proprietors, and police, to trace who was behind the theft.”
They have been used in robberies and in “violent crimes” across the country.
The spokesperson added: “We are asking people to be on the alert for any suspicious activity around cars.
“Owners can get theft-resistant number plates. These make it harder for someone to remove plates from your vehicle quickly and reuse them.
“Ask your local car dealer or registered number plate supplier for more information.”
