The teenager who died following an incident in a flat in the Creggan area of Derry in the early hours of this morning is not from the city, Derry Daily has learned.

A 21-year-old man arrested this morning is still being questioned by police who say they are “keeping an open mind” regarding the circumstances surrounding the death.

It is understood the 19-year-old woman,  a medical student studying the in city and from the Ards Peninsula, is understood to have been found with fatal injuries at the bottom of a flight stairs leading to a flat in Cromore Gardens.

Local people told how an ambulance left the scene shortly before 3.00am this morning,

The death has caused widespread shock in the Creggan community.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey said he was “shocked and appalled” to learn of the death.

Sinn Fein Cllr Kevin Campbell said local people were in “total shock” while Independent Cllr Gary Donnelly said the community had been “numbed” by the death.
