A major emergency will be stimulated at City of Derry Airport this weekend.

Saturday’s bi annual training exercise is required by the Civil Aviation Authority and will be carried out in partnership with local emergency services including the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, the Maritime and Coastal Agency, Western Health and Social Care Trust, British Red Cross, the University of Ulster School of Nursing and North West Regional College.
The emergency exercise will commence at noon will end around 4.00pm.
The purpose of the exercise is to test the airport’s emergency and safety capability in response to an incident involving an aircraft.
During the exercise there will be approximately three airport fire appliances and seven Fire Service appliances (including specialist appliances) in the vicinity of the airport.
A response by Ambulance Service and the maritime agency will also be anticipated.
Response vehicles may be move to and from the airport during these times.
The airport will be running the exercise outside of normal operational hours.
A spokesperson for Derry City Council said assured the public emergency fire and rescue cover will not be affected during this time.
The spokesperson added: “We thank the public in advance of this exercise for their co-operation, with disruption to the public being kept to a minimum.”
