Police in Derry are warning local people to be wary of “cold calls” about satellite television subscriptions.
The warning follows calls being made to people in the city purporting to be from a leading broadcaster and saying that subscription cards were out of date.
The residents were asked to confirm their banking details.
Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan, the Area Commander, said the calls were “a scam.”
He added: “So far we do not believe anyone has been fooled into giving details. It does illustrate, though, the ingenuity of the fraudsters.
They will tailor the nature of their calls, regularly switching the identities of the organisations they claim to represent.”
CI Callaghan concluded: “Our advice is that you should never release personal or banking details to people you do not know.”
