The approval by Derry City Council for a funding package of £25,000 for Christmas programmes across the city has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Cllr Mickey Cooper.
Cllr Cooper said the funding was secured following negotiations he had with the legacy department of the Council.
He said the funding, which will be combined with funding from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL), would allow all four neighbourhood areas in Derry, as well as the rural areas, to enjoy a full programme of Christmas events in their areas:
Cllr Cooper said: “I am delighted that council have approved this allocation. I have been in negotiations with council, the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure(DCAL) and community engagement officers for a number of weeks to identify funding opportunities and also draw up suggested programmes for each community area across the city and in the rural areas of the Waterside.”
“As a result of this funding, which will be combined with a pot of money provided by DCAL we will be able to host co-ordinated Christmas events in all areas of the city.”
Cllr Cooper said he was particularly looking forward to the launch of the events programme for the Outerwest.
He added: “Areas like Rosemount, Hazelbank, the Glen and Ballymagroarty will be able to avail of a co-ordinated Christmas programme for the first time.”
Cllr Cooper concluded: “I’d like to thank Derry City Councils legacy deptartment, DCAL and all the community representatives involved in making this happen and look forward to further details being released in the next few weeks.”
