The delay in developing a multi-pound sport and leisure centre in Dungiven has been described as “disgraceful and unacceptable” by East Derry MLA John Dallat.
Speaking ahead of an Assembly debate on adequate sporting provision in Co Derry town, Mr Dallat said: “Community and leisure facilities are important to the people of Dungiven for many reasons, so the absolute dismay felt when it was learned that the project approved by Limavady Borough to upgrade, modernise and extend their basic facilities could not proceed to design stage, even though the council had secured the funding and nothing would be laid in stone as to the final outcome.
“That was disgraceful, unacceptable and confirmation that nothing has changed.”
Mr Dallat was scathing of unionist councillors from Limavady who he said had supported the project but adopted a different stance when the issue came up at the new shadow council.
He added: “They voted against their own project. How unprincipled can public representatives become? The manner in which the decision was made is nothing short of appalling.
“For the decent people, Catholic, Protestant, other faiths and no faiths this is not the way to proceed.
“The opportunities for progress in the new council area are virtually unlimited. Yes, the challenges are many, but there are enough good people on that council to make a difference to the lives of people, including those in Dungiven, who are asking for nothing more than the right to allow a project to proceed to the next stage of development. It is as simple as that.”
