Cappella supergroup The Swingle Singers will take to the stage of St. Columb’s Hall in Derry this later this month as part of the second City of Derry International Choral Festival.
Best known for their modern, jazz-influenced versions of classical and pop favourites, the group was formed in the 1960s in Paris by Ward Swingle and shot to fame with their first album, Jazz Sebastien Bach.
The group went on to produce a hit version of Bach’s Air on a G String and, over the years, won a total of five Grammy awards for their critically-acclaimed albums.
The current group, now made up of seven young vocalists and based in London, produces covers of pop songs, classical music and contemporary music.
Their trademark sound has been used in many hit television series, including The West Wing, Sex and the City and Glee, as well as feature films including Thank You for Smoking, Wedding Crashers and Milk.
St. Columb’s Hall will be transformed into a cabaret-style venue for the concert on Friday, 24 October, welcoming the audience with a round-table layout and bar facilities throughout the event.
Tickets are on sale at the Millennium Forum and fans are encouraged to purchase a full table for 10 people in order to avail of half-price, group-rate tickets.
Festival Manager Fiona Crosbie said:“We can’t wait to welcome The Swingle Singers to St. Columb’s Hall this October and to hear their Timeless show, which will feature modern takes on old favourites and a cappella versions of The Beatles, Elbow, and Mumford and Sons.”
She added: “For those who love TV series like Glee and films such as Pitch Perfect, The Swingle Singers’ concert really is a must-see. They are the original a cappella singers!.”
The concert is part of a series of evening performances that will also include the world-renowned chamber ensemble The Sixteen on Wednesday, 22 October, and Neil Cowley Trio and Utopia and Reality Chamber Choir on Thursday, 23 October.
Tickets are on sale at the Millennium Forum Box Office on 02871 264 455 or online at www.millenniumforum.co.uk.
