BENEFIT FREEZE A FURTHER ATTACK ON WELFARE STATE – MCMAHON

Sinn Fein Cllr Brian McMahon.

Tory plans to impose a two year freeze on all benefit payments (except pensions) if re-elected to government is a recipe for disaster and would plunge further hardship and misery on the poorest and most vulnerable sections of society, Cllr Brian Mc Mahon has said.

The Strabane Sinn representative of the Derry-Strabane “super council” was speaking after British Chancellor George Osborne proposed a two-year benefits freeze.

He said the proposal to freeze benefits paid to people of working age was yet another example of the Tory welfare cuts agenda.

He added: “This has absolutely nothing to do with reform; it is simply an attack on the poor and the most vulnerable by a cabinet of millionaires.

“It seems that every day more punitive cuts designed to hollow out the welfare state are being announced by George Osborne and his colleagues.

“If implemented, this will only add to the misery of families and individuals who are already struggling to make ends meet.”

Cllr McMahon concluded: “Sinn Féin is totally opposed to the Tory-led cuts agenda and we encourage others to join us in standing up for all communities against these cuts.”
