Burglar276Residents have been urged to secure their homes and property following creeper burglaries in the Shantallow area.

SDLP Councillor Mark O’Donnell has urged was speaking after the latest incident in which a van was stolen in an overnight break-in at a house in Fernabbey.

Cllr O’Donnell said such crimes were becoming “all too common” in the Greater Shantallow area and must be condemned in the strongest terms.

He added: “In many cases the victims are at home in bed when burglars strike which makes these incidents all the more chilling.

“Burglary can be a very emotive crime as victims’ homes and privacy are invaded. Often the thieves make off with personal items that have both monetary and sentimental value. Some of those items will never be able to be replaced.”

Cllr O’Donnell urged people to not make it easy for burglars to gain access to their homes.

He added: “Unlocked doors and open windows are open invitations to burglars. Residents should take steps to secure their homes and property and help beat the burglars.”

Cllr O’Donnell concluded: “I would appeal to anyone with information on recent burglaries in the Greater Shantallow area to contact the police.”
