Foyle Valley Athletic Club’s Scotf Rankin cemented his reputation as one of the North West’s top 5k runners by winning the annual Marty’s Run held in Derry this morning.
Breaking the tape in a time of 15.20 (provisional time), Rankin – appropriately wearing number one – had 40 seconds to spare over second-placed Connor Doherty, of City of Derry Spartans.
Noel Logan, also of City of Derry, took third place in 16.08.
Springwell runner Gemma Turley won the ladies race in 18.57 with Martina McMullan (Foyle Valley) second in 19.42 and Catherine Whoriskey (City of Derry) third in 19.56.
Over 700 runners and 250 walkers took part in the annual event, organised by Foyle Valley Athletic Club in memory of Marty Gallagher, a popular club member who was tragically killed in 2009.
The race started opposite St Brigid’s College on Glengalliagh Road and went along the Skeoge link road, Buncrana Road and finished at Templemore Sports Complex.
