SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has paid tribute to Derry DUP MLA William Hay who announced today he had resigned as Speaker at the Northern Ireland Assembly and would stand down as an MLA for Foyle on Monday next.
In a letter read out in the Assembly this morning, Mr Hay said he was taking the decision due to ill-health.
Mr Durkan said: “I want to acknowledge the spirit and quality of the democratic service he has given as Speaker and MLA, as well as his previous contributions as a diligent councillor and distinguished mayor.
“I have often acknowledged that Willie Hay has shown that one can carry personal views and hold party outlooks but at the same time reflect wider city perspectives.
“Of course I wish him the fullest and fastest recovery on the health front so that he can continue his active contribution in the new role conferred on him.”
