SDLP Employment and Learning spokesperson Pat Ramsey has offered his support ahead of a rally organised by the Union of Students in Ireland calling on elected politicians to protect student support arrangements.

The Derry MLA said he wanted give his  backing to the campaign which will call on elected representatives to commit themselves to maintaining and enhancing student support arrangements.

Mr Ramsey added: “I have already expressed serious concerns about the future of student support arrangements in the North following budget cuts to the Department of Employment and Learning.

“It is vital that we make further education accessible to everyone regardless of their social background.

“We must recognise that in the current climate, education has become an expensive pursuit.

“Hardhip funds and other financial security arrangements have never been more important in ensuring that those who are struggling are supported to achieve their full potential.”

Mr Ramsey concluded: “For me, education is an opportunity to broaden our horizons, look beyond our own community and experience diverse new ways of thinking. In a divided society like Northern Ireland, we cannot class that as a luxury but an absolute necessity.”
