Sinn Féin Councillor Eric McGinley has condemned those responsible for the overnighgt explosion in the Hazelbank area of Derry.
No one was injured, although an elderly woman was left “deeply shaken” by the incident which occurred at Drumard Park at around 3.45am.
Police have revealed the owner of the van, which had been parked outside his home, reported the incident after discovering the vehicle had been damaged after hearing a “loud bang.”
PSNI Detective Inspector Cherith Craig said: “Damage was noted to its windows and upholstery. Police attended the scene and cordoned off the area.
“ATO were tasked to examine the van and it was determined that a small home made explosive device had gone off inside it.
“Further forensic examination of the van and the remnants of the device will take place in due course.”
Cllr McGinley said it was fortunate no one was seriously injured.
He said: “While it is not known what group is individual irresponsible for leaving this device, what is known, is that it could have caused serious injury to anyone in the vicinity
“I am making it clear to those responsible that the community does not want this and those behind it need to stop.
“In leaving this device they have shown no regard for the people of Hazelbank.”
Police have appealed to anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area to contact CID in Strand Road on the 101 non emergency telephone number.
DI Craig said information could also be passed anonymously through Crimstoppers on 0800 555 111.
