Staff at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry have been praised for the way they dealt with an Ebola scare.
Experts from London were consulted after a woman presented herself at the hospital’s accident and emergency department yesterday expressing concerns she might have had the deadly virus.
The Western Health Trust worked closely with the Public Health Agency (PHA), as lead for communicable diseases, and following advice from the PHA and health experts in London it was determined the patient would not have been in danger from contracting Ebola.
Maeve McLaughlin, Sinn Fein Foyle MLA and chairperson of the Stormont Health Committee, said the response from A&E staff was “professional and impressive.”
She added: “They followed the procedures in place for dealing with this scenario and liaised closely with the Public Health Agency and took advice from health experts.
“Thankfully, this patient did not have Ebola and no patients in the hospital currently have the disease.
“The professionalism and diligence of the staff at the hospital in dealing with this patient is to be commended.”
