Only three detectives will remain working on the PSNI’s Bloody Sunday murder investigation from today, relatives of those killed have been told.
Two weeks ago, the PSNI confirmed it was losing the majority of detectives involved in the case due to budget cuts of £51.4 million.
Victims’ relatives last night met with senior police officers, including Detective Chief Inspector Ian Harrison, the man leading the inquiry, and were told the investigation team was to lose 10 officers from today.
The families were told the murder inquiry could come under the remit of a “legacy investigation team” which has yet to be established.
Police refused to comment after the meeting but Kate Nash, whose brother William was one of those shot dead in the 1972 massacre, said the “investigation is over.”
The announcement of the scaling back of the investigation came at a time when the PSNI revealed it was costing £40,000 a night to police the ongoing loyalist “protest camp” in North Belfast.
