Derry City 0 UCD 1
Derry City’s last home game in the SSE Airtricity Premier Division season ended with a disappointing defeat by relegation-threatened UCD.
In a game of few chances played at a wet and windy Brandywell, the students took the lead when Mark Langtry gave Gerard Doherty no chance with a 25 yard thunderbolt in the 33rd minute.
City thought they had drawn level in the 72nd minute when Sean Houston got a touch to the ball as it appeared to be drifting into the net, but the goal was ruled out after he was deemed offside.
Doherty produced a brilliant in injury time to prevent Benson doubling the lead.
Meanwhile, Derry City’s opponents in the FAI Cup final in just over two weeks, St Patrick’s Athletic, also suffered a home defeat, going down 2-0 to basement club Athlone Town at Inchicore.
Dundalk missed the chance to clinch the league title when held to a 1-1 draw by Drogheda United.
Cork City’s win over Bohemians means the Leesiders top the table by two points from the Hoops with just one game remaining – which just happens to be Dundalk v Cork City!
