Police in Derry have confirmed they are treating a fire in the Galliagh area of the city in the early hours of this morning as “suspicious.”
The blaze, which broke out at Temple Park shortly before 2.45am, completely destroyed a wooden cabin to the rear of the house while windows in the house and the neighbouring property were damaged by the heat.
A dog, which was rescued during incidents, is understood be in a critical condition and currently receiving treatment from a vet.
No one was injured but homeowners were left badly shaken by the incident.
Sinn Fein Cllr Tony Hassan, who visited the scene, said it was lucky no one was killed or seriously injured and called on anyone with information to pass it on to police.
Appealing for information, PSNI Detective Sergeant Alan Adair said: “Detectives would ask anyone who was in the area between 2.15am and 2.45am to inform police of anything they saw, or indeed anyone who has any information is also asked to contact them at Strand Road on the non emergency number 101.”
DS Adair added: “If someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
