Community groups in the Magherafelt area of Co Derry are being encouraged to get water efficient.
Northern Ireland Housing Executive staff have teamed up with NI Water to encourage water efficiency in community allotments and gardens in the area.
Community groups recently visited Housing Executive offices where they were given a presentation from NI Water’s Environmental Policy Unit on how to be more water efficient in in the garden and at home.
The groups, PRAXIS, Glenburn Park Residents Association, Killowen Drive Community Association and Lower Castledawson Community Association, also received free 120 litre waterbutts.
Declan McAllister, manager of Housing Executive’s Magherafelt office said they were delighted to have been involved in “this partnership approach” with NI Water.
He added: “We have been working with many of our community groups to create community growing spaces, allotments and gardens so water efficiency is an important element in maintaining those areas.”
Anna Marshall, Outreach and Learning Officer for NI Water, said the free water butts were a key part of its water efficiency campaign.
She added: “With over 85,000 litres of rainwater collecting on the roofs of homes in Northern Ireland every year, waterbutts are the perfect way to water your garden as rainwater is full of natural goodness that plants love.”
