SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan will be supporting amendments to the Second Reading of the Recall Bill in the British House of Commons today which could see unpopular members of parliament being removed from office in between elections.
Mr Durkan said people should have the right to be able to hold their elected representatives to account in the years in between elections and not just at election time.
He added: “The vast majority of MPs have nothing to fear from this proposed law, but those who do things such as cheat on their expenses will.
“This Bill, if enacted, would give voters the right to recall their MP. It would go some way towards addressing people’s disillusionment with politics and help regain their trust in elected politicians.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “I will therefore be doing all I can to help this important Bill become law.”
