Fifteen new jobs have been created as a result of Derry’s only city centre cinema undergoing a £1 million revamp.
This weekend will see the curtain rise on the refurbished Omniplex on Strand Road.
Omniplex Cinema Group, the largest in Northern Ireland, has relaunched the complex with the latest audio, screen and seating systems.

The organisation employs 300 people at 10 cinemas in Northern Ireland, at West Belfast, Antrim, Armagh, Lisburn, Newry, Carrickfergus, Larne and Bangor, as well as operating a further eight cinemas in the Republic.
The Derry cinema, which has been entertaining local audiences for 80 years, now offers film goers the OmniplexMAXX which has the latest development in 3D immersive sound, wall-to-wall, floor to ceiling, curved screen and leather rockers for premium seating giving you the ultimate cinema experience.
In addition to this, the cinema has had a complete overhaul of the entrance, hospitality and common areas which concludes the refurbishment of the city centre landmark.
Omniplex Operations Director Paul John Anderson, said the Derry Omniplex held a “very special place” in the organisation and was “a priority” for investment and job creation.
He added the development was a “crucial addition” to the revitalisation of Derry city centre and underpinned the group’s commitment to supporting a “high quality tourism offering as well as a magnificent facility for local people.”
Mayor of Derry Councillor Brenda Stevenson welcomed the announcement.
She said: “I am delighted to welcome the redevelopment of the Strand Omniplex, and this significant investment in one of our most important city centre resources.
“The announcement of fifteen additional jobs is particularly welcome in such challenging times for the local economy.
“The Strand Cinema has long been an entertainment institution in Derry and it’s fantastic to see it continue its legacy in the city as it moves forward with additional staff and new improved technology and facilities.”
