Jimmy and Kathleen Cuddihy.

It is understood the man being questioned about the deaths of an elderly couple in Carndonagh is their son Julian.

Jimmy and Kathleen Cuddihy, who were in their 70s, were found dead in their home on the outskirts of Inishowen town  just after 9.00am yesterday.

An axe was found at the scene.

Their 42-year-old son is still being detained at Buncrana Garda Station.

The couple had four children and had been living in Carndonagh since the 1960s.

Their bodies were found by a builder who was part of a team renovating the couple’s home on the road to Buncrana, about 500 yards outside town.

Gardai forensic officers at the scene last night.

The man was along with the couple’s son James who made the gruesome discovery.

He revealed “It was just horrific. I can’t really speak about it because it was just so shocking.

“I can’t really describe what I seen because I found it all so hard to take in.

“It just keeps going through my head – those images of them lying there. I can’t describe it. Oh God, it was just horrific.”

Son James lives just behind the couple’s stone-clad bungalow home in Churchtown just outside Carndonagh.

The couple, who were in their 70s, are survived by their four grown-up children including sons Julian, James and daughters Delila and Maureen.

Jimmy was a retired maths teacher who was very well-known in the area while wife Maureen was a retired nurse.

Jimmy was originally from Kilkenny, but had lived in Donegal for decades wife while Maureen was from the area.

The dead man was a maths and technology teacher at Carndonagh Community School.

It is believed the family all attended a recent family wedding and nothing suggested there was anything wrong in the house.
