Parents of a primary school which has been evacuated due to a security alert in Strabane are “rightly angry” at those responsible, local Sinn Fein Cllr Brian McMahon has said.
Pupils and staff at Gaelscoil Ui Dhochartaigh in Ballycolman Estate were moved to a nearby community centre as a precaution this morning while police carry out a search of the area following a report a device was thrown at a police patrol in Ballycolman Avenue last night.
Cllr McMahon, a classroom assistant at the Gaelscoil, said the need to evacuate was a “stark example” of how little those behind the “suspicious activity,” which led to its closure, care for the community.
He added: “Parents of the children and the wider community are rightly angry that the Gaelscoil children have been subjected to this ordeal which also meant that they were unable to have their Halloween Party this afternoon.
“It is ironic that this happened in a week in which the Gaelscoil and local Irish language community hosted pupils and teachers from Lithuania, Poland,Romania, Spain and Portugal showcasing all that is best about our native language, music sport and great community spirit in Strabane.
“Hopefully. what happened today has not dented the otherwise extremely positive and memorable experience the visiting international delegations say they have had had in our area.”
