An Irish language primary school has been evacuated due to a security alert in Strabane.
Staff and pupils moved from Gaelscoil Ui Dhochartaigh in Ballycolman Estate as police carry out a search of the area following a report a device was thrown at a police patrol in Ballycolman Avenue last night.
Those responsible have been condemned by SDLP Strabane Councillor Patsy Kelly.
He said: “I have been speaking to the local PSNI commander who said he believes something was thrown at police; however, they have been unable to ascertain exactly what it was.
“It seems now that there is a suspicious device near the water pumping station in Ballycolman and this is adding to the disruption and hassle local residents are putting up with due to the whims of those who have no regard for life or community.
“Thankfully, nobody has had to be evacuated from their home as of yet, however the disruption caused by the presence of the emergency services and the worry that yet another suspicious device has been found is a worry to all the residents here.
“The local primary school took their own decision to evacuate the school and I back that as children’s safety is paramount.
“Anybody with information about this and other similar incidents in Strabane over the past few months are duty bound to bring that to the police.”
Cllr Kelly concluded: “It’s plainly obvious that those responsible are quite happy to put the local community through the ringer each and every time they decide to play fast and loose with lives of the police and local residents.”
