The newly-formed Derry-Strabane “super council” has been named Derry City and Strabane District Council.
The decision was taken a meeting of the “shadow council” at which unionists failed to have “Londonderry” included in the title.
The new name was proposed by Sinn Fein’s Paul Fleming and supported by his party colleagues, the SDLP and the four independent members on the council.
The DUP’s Gary Middleton failed with an amendment to call the new local authority “Londonderry City and Strabane District Council.”
Ulster Unionist Derek Hussey also failed with the name “Foyle District Council.”
Last month, Cllr Hussey proposed the same name at a meeting of the council but failed to get another councillor, including his own party colleague Mary Hamilton, to second it, resulting in the motion failing.
However, at yesterday’s meeting of the “Shadow Cuuncil,” the DUP’s Gary Middleton second the amendment which was defeated when voted on.
The Derry City and Stabane District Council will come into effect on 1 April next year.
