Those responsible for dumping rubbish which has resulted in fears of rat infestation in the Lone Moor Road area of Derry have been blasted by Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly.
Cllr Kelly was speaking after being told by residents who live along the Lone Moor Road and several of the off streets that a number of dead rats had been found in the back gardens of homes and that they had also been seen in the laneways.
People putting rubbish also came across rats around their “wheelie bins.”
Cllr Kelly said: “It can be a very frightening experience for anyone to lift the lid on the bin for a rat to jump out in front of them.
“So it is important all lids on bins are secured.”
Cllr Kelly added with the onset of winter residents should take every precaution to ensure that rats could not get into their homes, outhouses or garden sheds.
He concluded: “It is obvious that if anyone dumps the rubbish in the laneways they have no regard for others because while they wanted rid of the rubbish they were prepared to dump it on other people’s doorsteps.”
