A second-half double from Christy Fagan has sunk Derry City’s FAI Cup Final dream at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon.
St Pat’s ended their 53-year FAI Cup hoodoo thanks to a double strike from the prolific Fagan, who was guilty of missing a number of glorious opportunities in the first-half.
Derry had their chances and Ryan McBride and Rory Patterson could’ve scored in the fist-half.
Fagan bundled home a scrappy first after being set-up by Keith Fahey, and that sent them on their way.
Derry responded well and were lucky not to equalize, Barry McNamee forced a good save out of Brendan Clarke, while Rory Patterson narrowly headed over after 75 minutes.
Derry continued to press but were unable to break them down, they were then caught out late on as they pushed bodies forward.
Barry Molloy was dispossessed and Fagan rounded Gerard Doherty to tap home and seal the cup win for St Pat’s.
That sparked jubilant scenes amongst St Pat’s fans and players who ended the club’s 53-year wait for an FAI Cup.
