Police have sealed the area off an a number of families in the Creggan Heights/Circular Road area have been asked to leave their homes.
The city’s police commander, Chief Superintendent Stephen Cargin, said a “substantial explosive device,” which exploded at 8.40pm, damaged a police vehicle on routine patrol and a car travelling behind it.
The garden of an elderly woman was also damaged.
Two officers in the armoured Discovery vehicle and two civilians in the car travelling behind escaped injury.
CS Cargin defended the police delay in attending the scene following the attack.
Pointing out it was the third attempt to kill police in the city in the last three weeks, CS Cargin added: “No doubt God has been looking after police officers once again.
