A police vehicle was damaged when a pipe bomb was thrown at it in Derry last night.
The incident, which followed the shooting of two men in the city, occurred in the Creggan Heights area at around 8.40pm.
The device bounced off the police vehicle’s door into a garden where in exploded.
No one was injured in the incident.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness the two shootings and attempt to kill members of the Police Service in Derry were “futile acts which will achieve nothing for those responsible.”
SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey said local people had been “deeply shaken” by the bomb attack.
He added: “It’s simply through luck, rather than design, that this attack didn’t take the lives of police officers or residents.
“It’s simply an outrageous attack on this community. The perpetrators have nothing to offer but pain and misery that the people of the city don’t want, need or deserve.
“I would call on anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious or who may have any information to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.”
Mr Ramsey also condemned the shooting of a 26-year-old man in the Liscloon Drive area last night and that of a 42-year-old man in the Ballymagroarty area the previous night “disgraceful attempt to kill and maim.”
Describing “punishment style” attack on a man in the Shantallow area as”vicious and heinous,” Mr Ramsey said those behind the shootings once again taken the law into their own hands and dispensed a “vile form of rough justice.”
He added: “There is no room for this kind of savage attack in the prosperous Derry we’re trying to build. My thoughts and prayers are with the young man and his family at this difficult time.
