The Police Ombudsman has been called on to investigate a search operation by the PSNI’s Tactical Support Group (TSG) in the Creggan area of Derry last night.
Three teenagers, aged 13, 14 and 16, were arrested, after police involved in a follow-up operation following Sunday night’s bomb attack in Circular Roald/Creggan Heights area, came under attack from a large number of youths.
Petrol bombs, stones and bottles were thrown at police who have rejected allegations they were “heavy-handed.”
No one was injured in the disturbance.
Independent councillor on Derry City and Strabane District Council, Gary Donnelly, claimed the trouble arose because of heavy-handed tactics used by the TSG.
The claims have been refuted by PSNI Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan.
The call for the Police Ombudsman Dr Michael Maguire to become involved has come from Sinn Fein Cllr Colly Kelly who said he had been contacted by number of residents about “some aspects” of the policing operation.
He added: “I feel the best way forward is that if anyone has concerns that they contact their solicitor and the police ombudsman straight away to take up any complaints they may have.”
The follow-up search is continuing and families who were moved out of their homes yesterday morning are not expected to be allowed to return until later today.
