An international conference being later this week will highlight Britain’s failure to uphold human rights legislation in the North, Sinn MEP Martina Anderson has said.
Ms Anderson said Transitional Justice Conference organised by University of Ulster’s Transitional Justice Institute will “shine an international spotlight” on Britain’s failures to adhere to Article 2 responsibilities, particularly around the “shoot-to-kill” cases, collusion and state-sponsored murder.
Key speakers at the event, being staged in the Ulster Hall in Belfast on Thursday, will be the European Council’s Human Rights Commissioner, Nils Muiznieks, Attorney General John Larkin and Police Ombudsman, Dr Michael Maguire.
Ms Anderson said: “Victims campaigners have long highlighted Britain’s failures to comply with human rights legislation during the conflict in the North, particularly Article 2 of the human rights act, which guarantees the right to life.
“That failure has been recognised by respected human rights organisations from across the world.
“It is essential that European Commissioner hears first hand from families affected by the British government’s failures, not only to comply with Article 2, but also to deal effectively with the past.
“Sinn Féin is committed to dealing with the past.”
Ms Anderson concluded: “We have consistently supported families who have been campaigning for truth and justice about the deaths of their loved ones and will continue to do so.”
