The Regional Development Committee at Stormont is to carry out an inquiry into the procurement procedures which resulted in the cost of the upgrade of the Derry-Coleraine rail link doubling in price, East Derry Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has said.
Speaking after a meeting of the committee, the East Derry MLA said he had a secured a “full committee inquiry” to look into the matter and the wider issues of central procurement procedures.
Earlier this week, Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said the upgrade would be further delayed after revealing the cost of the project had risen from £2o million to £40 million.
Mr Ó hOisín said the “huge difference” needed to be explained.
He added: “This inquiry is welcome and I hope it will be fully supported by all committee members.”
He concluded: “The Regional Development Minister and Translink will also be called before the committee to explain the rise in costs.”
