Two Derry men have been appointed as two of three new members of the Northern Ireland committee of the Big Lottery Fund.
Tony Doherty and Dr Michael Dobbins, along with Eileen Mullan, join NI committee chairperson Frank Hewitt and committee members Julie Harrison and Geraldine Campbell to oversee a diverse range of funding programmes and activities to ensure that National Lottery funding makes a difference to the lives of people and communities most in need.
Mr Doherty is the regional co-ordinator of the Healthy Living Centre’s Alliance in Derry.
Between 2002 and 2014, he was general manager of the city’s award-winning Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum, which he helped set up in 1999.
He said he was “delighted” to be appointed to the committee.
He added: “Over the years of working within the community sector I have witnessed how neighbourhoods, towns and villages have been transformed by the Fund’s support.
“I am particularly interested in how the Big Lottery Fund can continue to work with others to overcome the grinding effects of social inequality in our society.”
Mr Doherty also served as co-chair of the Western Investing for Health Partnership from 2009 to 2012.
He currently chairs the North Qest Integrated Care Partnership, a key driver in the Transforming Your Care health strategy.
Dr Michael Dobbins, is the principal of Ardnashee School and College in Derry.
He is also the founder and chair of the city’s Liberty Consortium, an award winning body that promotes community infrastructure and services for children and adults with learning disabilities.
He said was “very excited” about joining the team at the Big Lottery Fund.
He added: “It is also a great honour to be able to work for an organisation that puts communities first and I look forward to taking up my responsibilities.”
Dr Dobbins serves on a range of public and community sector boards.
He is also a published author and a regular speaker on educational matters at conferences throughout Ireland.
