Staff from Derry City Council’s Environment and Development departments yesterday picked up their certificates after completing a comprehensive ten week NEBOSH health and safety programme delivered by JMD Training.
The NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in Britain, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge.
The Council recently became the first council in Northern Ireland to achieve the OHSAS 18001 standard in the area of Health and Safety management across its three council directorates.
The 18001 standard is internationally accepted as a method of assessing and auditing occupational health and safety management system and is based on the most stringent legislation.
Town Clerk and Chief Executive with the Council, Sharon O’Connor, said the Council continued to be extremely proactive in training its staff in the area of health and safety.
“I would like to congratulate all those who have completed the recent NEBOSH training programme,” she said.
“We have made health and safety a key priority, safeguarding staff and customers and maintaining high standards of service. Equipping employees with the essential skills and knowledge to maintain a high level of safe operations is invaluable and I would encourage other organisations to consider signing up for the course.”
