Almost 1,800 primary school pupils in Derry are taking part in the Fresh Start/Tus Maith educational project.
The initiative gives them an opportunity to make a positive contribution to their community.
The project is a partnership between the Triax Neighborhood management team and the Housing Executive’s Social Education project.
Last month, pupils at St Eugene’s, Long Tower, Nazareth House, St John’s, Holy Child and Fountain primary schools as well as Gaelscoil Eadain Mhoir were involved in discussions about what makes a good community, and the role they have to play.
In addition to the classroom based talks there is a strong practical element to the project with each school participating in environmental improvement days – with daffodils, tulips and snowdrops planting and community clean ups planned.
The bulbs were provided by the Housing Executive grounds maintenance team.
Patrick Duddy, the Housing Executive’s Social Education Officer, said the project was a “great example” of partnership working.
He added: “There has been great enthusiasm from everyone involved and hopefully it’ll become an annual fixture in everyone’s calendar.”
