Derry City Council has praised the efforts of the Derry public and wider community for helping to have the threats removed against Council Community Warden Scheme staff.
Mayor Cllr Brenda Stevenson said support from the people of Derry had successfully put pressure on the group calling itself the IRA to withdraw the threats issued to her staff last week.
Cllr Stevenson said: “I would like to thank the public, the unions and everyone who provided support to the workers and their families over the past week.
“It has been a difficult week for everyone involved.
“We will be concentrating our efforts now on providing what support is necessary for the staff and their families for the future.”
Sharon O’Connor, Town Clerk and Chief Executive with Derry City Council said this was a good example of how the public can stand together for the greater good of the local community.
“This should never have happened in the first place. These threats were totally unfounded and unwarranted.
“I am pleased that common sense had prevailed and this intimidation of staff has been stopped. I would like to pay tribute to everyone involved in helping us at this difficult time, in particular the trade unions, elected members and the wider community in Derry who provided us with huge support.”
Ms. O’Connor added that while the Show of Support planned for lunchtime today is cancelled, the Special Council meeting scheduled to take place at the Guildhall at 2pm will continue as planned.
She concluded that she hoped to meet with community warden staff and unions at a later stage to discuss options for the resumption of the Community Safety Warden Scheme in the city.
