Everyone has a role to play in the battle against bullying, SDLP Foyle MLA Colum Eastwood has said.
Speaking after the launch of Anti-Bullying Week, the Stormont Education Committee member said it was important that everyone noted the theme of this year’s event “Together We Will Make a Difference” and ensured they “do their bit.
He said: “It is very concerning that bullying, in its many guises, is something that occurs in every school and it is important that we all play our parts in helping to stamp it out.
“Repeated unchallenged bullying can have a serious impact on a child’s mental health and cause serious long term self-esteem issues.
“We must do everything within our power to make a difference in the battle against bullying. Whether it is cyber, physical or mental bullying we have a duty to ensure it does not go undetected.”
Mr Eastwood added: “It is important that so many – more than 800 schools and youth groups – have participated in Anti-Bullying Week which was organised by the NI Anti-Bullying Forum (NIABF).”
He concluded: “By continually highlighting this serious issue among children and young people the message that it is wholly unacceptable behaviour can be delivered and attitudes towards it can be changed.”
