Three men, aged 18, 22 and 23, were arrested following reports of a number of attempted hijackings, burglaries and other related offences in the Rossnagaliagh area of Derry yesterday, police in the city have said.
Police have said while one of the men was described as having a firearm during the attempted hijacking of vehicles, there were no reports of any shots having been fired during the incidents.
Police also said two vehicles were stolen, one of which collided with a police vehicle in the Carnhill area.
Earlier, it had been claimed a number of families in the Galliagh/Shantallow areas of the city had been left “badly traumatised” during a “night of mayhem and terror” during which it had been claimed a shot was fired during one of the attempted hijacking.
PSNI Area Commander Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan appealed for anyone who witnessed any of the incidents or anyone with any information to contact CID in Strand Road Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.
He added if anyone preferred to provide information without giving their details they could contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
