The number of people waiting to be housed in Derry has increased by 30% in the past four years, SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has said.
Stressing the situation was at “crisis point,” Mr Ramsey immediate action was needed to tackle the problem.
Mr Ramsey is to put the case for extra provision, especially bungalow accommodation for older and disabled people, to the Minister of Social Development.
He said: “I have already outlined the case to the minister and highlighted the growing demand for new build bungalow homes which has been clear for some time.
“Local housing lists have increased by some 30% in four years, despite the welcome completion of developments at Skeoge Road of almost 300 homes. “The situation has deteriorated.
“Applicants remain on stagnant lists over a number of years as the level of new build homes has been outpaced by increased demands on the social housing sector.”
Mr Ramsey concluded: “If we are to avoid exacerbating what is already a housing crisis the Minister must ensure that action is taken soon to deliver on his stated aim of doubling social housing provision over the next three years with the additional building of bungalows remaining a priority going forward.”
