Children were caught up in the shooting of man in Derry this evening, it has emerged.
The 29-year-old victim is being treated in Altnagelvin Hospital after being shot at teatime.
He sustained gunshot wounds to his right leg in the paramilitary-style attack at Cecilia’s Walk in the Bligh’s Lane area of the city at around 6.00pm.
His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has condemned the shooting which, she said, was carried out while children were in the vicinity.
She said: “Tonight’s shooting at St Cecilia’s Walk has to be condemned. There can be absolutely no justification for this type of action.
“This must have been a very frightening experience for everyone caught up in this, especially as its reported that a number of young children were in the vicinity at the time of the shooting.
“It’s very sad that when thousands of people were out tonight celebrating the turning on of the Christmas lights in the city centre that others were trying to drag our society backwards and bringing guns onto our streets.”
Cllr Logue concluded: “We are in a new era, we are creating a new society for the younger generation and there can be no place for this type of activity.
Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan has appealed for information.
He said: “I would appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to contact Police at Foyle on the non-emergency number 101.
“Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
