Residents in the greater Bishop Street area of Derry have been warned to be on the alert for lead thefts.
The alert from Sinn Fein Councillor Patricia Logue follows a number of thefts of lead from homes in Long Tower Court and Moore Walk in the early hours this morning.
Cllr Logue said: “People would find it hard to believe that when they are in their beds, that in the middle of the night there are people taking lead from their properties.
“This is just not opportunist small time thefts.
“There have been a number of stories in the local press over the past few years regarding the theft of lead from homes, businesses and schools in the Derry area.”
Cllr Logue called on the PSNI to put in place whatever resources were available to apprehend whoever was behind the thefts, and if the community had any information on who was responsible to bring it forward.
She concluded: “I would also urge scrap merchants in the Derry and Donegal area to be wary of people trying to sell off lead material quickly.”
