Eglinton-based charity Something Special has won an Innovation Award at the prestigious Pride of Place Awards.
Judges said Something Special was an “exceptional entry where an innovative social enterprise cafe was providing skills training, but was also a focal point for integration with the local community, a social outlet and a respite for carers.”
The awards are organised by Co-operation Ireland and are held every year to recognise the work carried out by communities across the island of Ireland.
The group have been congratulated by Derry Mayor Mayor Cllr Stevenson who said she was “extremely proud” of their achievement and that the excellent work they did had been recognised.
She added: “I attended the awards ceremony at the weekend and it was absolutely fantastic.
“The group were really excited to have been recognised in this way and they were over the moon at getting the award. Its a very deserving accolade for the group who do so much good work for people with disabilities in our city and region.”
Danny McCartney, from Derry City Council, who nominated Something Special for the award said he was delighted at their success.
“Something Special does a lot to advance education, training and personal development of both young and older people who struggle from disabilities. They also organise different projects, activities and events with hopes that it will improve social integration and it is fantastic that their work has been formally acknowledged.”
A Mayoral reception for the winners is due to be held for the group in the coming weeks.
