Derry’s first ever Fashion Fest, held in the city over the weekend, was a resounding success.
For four days local designers, retailers, beauty specialists and fabulous fashionistas gathered to support a whole host of events, from classic catwalk glamour to “make your own’’ workshops, which took place at various venues including some of the city’s most iconic buildings.
The festival programme featured a diverse range of events including an Industry Focus day with big names in the fashion industry including Wayne Hemingway and Sonya Lennon; a Wedding Fashion Showcase in Derry’s beautiful St Columb’s Cathedral; a Designer Showcase event in St Columb’s Hall; a two day Vintage Fair; and a High Tea and Fancy Frocks afternoon set in the historic Georgian splendour of Prehen House.
The Fashion Fest programme was organised by Derry City Council’s Business Opportunities team with support from Derry City Council Legacy Fund and Invest NI and the European Regional Development Fund.
Oonagh McGillion, Director of Legacy with Derry City Council, said the weekend’s events were a “resounding” success and demonstrated what an appetite there was in the city for fashion and design showcases.
She added: “We have a strong historic connection with fashion and textiles, and a huge talent pool to draw from when it comes to design and the creative industries, which became hugely apparent last year during our City of Culture Programme.
“The Legacy Programme was committed to bringing real value to projects that are part of the city’s economic future, and events such as Fashion Fest have a key role in raising our profile as a dynamic location when it comes to fashion and the arts. Well done to all who made this programme such a success!”
The city’s Mayor, Councillor Brenda Stevenson, was among the many who dressed to impress for some of the stunning showcase events.
She said she was “so delighted” the festival made such an impact in its inaugural year.
She added: “It’s a reflection of the city’s growing status as a creative hub, where designers, crafters and artists can become part of a cross-border network of like minded industry professionals.
“The events were all strongly supported by Derry retailers and designers who collaborated to deliver some outstanding showcases, and I would like to thank all of them for their enthusiasm and energy throughout the weekend.
“I would also like to thank the team at Derry City Council for putting together such a diverse and visionary programme which really captured the imagination of all those involved. And of course all those at the North West Volunteer Centre for assisting with the events throughout the weekend.”
She concluded: “I’m already looking forward to next year’s Fashion Fest.”
