Members of the Derry public who find what they believe to be drugs are being asked to hand them over to police.
The call follows an incident in which a member of the public disposed of what he believed was a legal high.
In fact, from a later conversation he had with police, it transpired the material was Mephedrone, which is not legal.
Sergeant Phil Martin, of the Foyle City North Neighbourhood Policing Team, urged local people to hand over to police any material they become aware of and suspect was drugs-related.
He added: “Mephedrone used to be legal, it was one of the so-called legal highs, but the classification changed and it is now an illegal drug. Slang names include drone, M-CAT, Monkey Madness and meow meow
“It is important to keep in mind that ‘legal highs’ may pose a risk also and these can be handed in to police as well.”
Sgt Martin said contact could be with local neighbourhood policing teams on the 101 non-emergency telephone number.
