The death has taken place of Newell McBride, one of Derry’s best known quizmasters.
Affectionately known as “Hammy,” Newell passed away peacefully at his Oakfield Avenue home this afternoon in the company of his family. He was 72.
A qualified compositor, Newell worked for the Derry Journal newspaper for over 20 years having spent a number of years working in Belfast.
He also worked as a part-time barman in a number of pubs in the town, including The Gate Inn, Masons Bar, Don Bar and Bennigans Bar as well as a steward at the Catholic Club in Bayview Terrace.
However, he will be best remembered for the “fun” quizzes he hosted weekly in the Don Bar and Bennigans Bar and as an avid fan of West Ham United.
John Gill, editor of Derry Daily, was a lifelong friend.
He said: “Derry has lost a true gentleman. The master of the ‘one-liners,’ there was never a dull moment with Newell, especially at his quizzes which he devoted hours putting together.”
Newell’s funeral will take place from his home this Friday.
He is survived by his wife Josephine, daughters Karen, Julie and Lisa, and sister Margaret, to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
