A Sinn Fein councillor and three other men have been released without charge tonight.
Tony McCaul, 62, was elected to the shadow Causeway Coast and Glens Council earlier this year.
He was detained along with a man aged 31 and two men in their 50s at houses in the Dungiven area of Co Derry on Thursday morning.
Another man, also 31, was later arrested by police in County Antrim.
Detectives also carried out a series of searches during the operation.
Earlier the PSNI said they were investigating paramilitary activity, including shootings and threats, predominantly over the past four years.
Chief Inspector Una Jennings, from the PSNI’s serious crime branch, had said: “We are investigating various forms of paramilitary activity in the area, predominantly over the last four years.
“These include shooting incidents and threats.”
The men had been taken to Antrim police station for questioning.
However a PSNI spokesman tonight said: “Four men aged 62, 58, 31 & 31, arrested in connection with paramilitary activity in Dungiven area, have all been released unconditionally.”
