Foyle MP Mark Durkan has teamed up with one of the world’s best known women to help raise awareness of the importance of HIV testing.
The SDLP representative was joined by Nancy Dell’Olio at Westminster in the run up to World Aids Day taking place on Monday next.
The event, organised by the HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust coincides with National HIV Testing Week, and saw MPs come together to pledge support for efforts to halt the spread of HIV.
Last week, Public Health England (PHE) announced that there are now almost 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK, around a quarter of who are undiagnosed and therefore far more likely to pass the virus on.
Mr Durkan is encouraging those most at risk from HIV to take a test.
He said: “I am delighted to show my support for the effort to stop HIV. We know that there are more people than ever living with HIV locally, and far too many of these are still undiagnosed.”
Mr Durkan concluded: “This is the perfect time to remind people that HIV testing is fast and simple – and it’s one of the best weapons we have to stop the spread of HIV.”
