New premises for Gaelscoil Neachtain in Dungiven have been officially opened by Education Minister John O’Dowd.
The school, which opened in 2012 is one of only two controlled Irish-medium schools in the North.
It operated at first on the site of the former St Canice’s Primary School until relocating to refurbished premises at the vacant Dungiven Primary School.
Speaking at the officially opening, Minister O’Dowd said: “I approved the establishment of Gaelscoil Neachtain in May 2012 in recognition of the clear demand for Irish-medium education from parents in Dungiven area.
“It is a pleasure to now have the opportunity to officially open the school following more than £700,000 investment by my Department.”
Mr O’Dowd commended everyone connected with the school for their hard work and commitment to the children.
He said: “The financial input will have a positive impact on the school and community and create many positive outcomes.
“The school is now well equipped to enable it to deliver the curriculum and meet the needs of its pupils for many years to come and I wish everyone involved with the school well for the future.”
During his visit to the North West, the Minister also visited St Patrick’s and St Brigid’s College in Claudy to view the accommodation and meet with the staff and pupils at the school.
