THOUSANDS of people have flocked to the new Christmas Fair market in Ebrington Square on its first weekend in operation.
And those visiting it today say it has brought an extra special dimension to the city.
It has also pulled in visitors from all over Ireland on its first day.
Attractions at the Waterside venue – replacing the Guildhall market last year – include a pop-up cinema known as the Festive Film Factory and a Festive Fun Fair.
The Spiegeltent Bar was doing a roaring trade alongside the LegenDerry Ice Rink and the Christmas market stalls selling crafts and foods from around the world.
John O’Hara, his wife Maureen and children Ben, aged 10, and Muireann, aged seven, travelled from Sligo.
“We came up on Saturday and enjoyed the City’s Walls and the shops, well the girls enjoyed the shops, but the Christmas market and fair made it extra special,” said John.
“We’ll be recommending it to all our friends. It’s a beautiful city and the walk across that peace bridge was wonderful.”
Mayor Brenda Stevenson said she was ‘hugely proud’ of what Derry had to offer visitors alike.
“It’s as good as anything in any other city and is a huge boost for the city in some many ways,” she said.
